Origin Juniper
Juniper (Juniperus Communis) is a conifer from the cypress family. It occurs naturally in the Benelux and in the Netherlands can be found mainly in the Veluwe. The name Juniperus is derived from a Celtic word that means prickly. Juniperus is a thorny bush. Communis means 'common' in Latin.
Use of juniper powder
The juniper played a role in prehistory. The pollen from the berries was found in soil layers around the year 13,500 - 12,100 BC. The berries and seeds have been found in cesspools and this indicates the use of the berries as a spice.
Where do I purchase Organic juniper powder?
Juniper berries have a spicy, bittersweet taste. Because the taste of juniper berries develops slowly, they need to be cooked for a long time. These juniper berries are ground into powder, which means that it takes less time for the flavour to be released. The powder is rich in many vitamins (vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3 and vitamin C), minerals (calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and sodium) and antioxidants.
