Details Origin Juniper Juniper (Juniperus Communis) is a conifer from the cypress family. It occurs naturally in the Benelux and in the Netherlands can be found mainly in the Veluwe. The name Juniperus is derived from a Celtic word that means prickly. Juniperus is a thorny bush. Communis means 'common' in Latin. Use of juniper granules The juniper played a role in prehistory. The pollen of the berries has been found in soil layers around the year 13,500 - 12,100 BC. The berries and seeds have been found in cesspools and this indicates the use of the berries as a spice.
